QR codes!

Image
Following on from my previous attempts at laser cutting QR codes, I had a little doodle of some ideas design ideas that could both work better and that could include a QR code. I watched a few YouTube videos as well, to get an idea of how I could successfully create a scan-able code that could also peak visual interest. I came across an interesting idea - cutting a stencil out of the plastic coating on acrylic plastic and painting over it to produce a code! Intriguing! I also wanted to try and raster again but on lighter wood but ran out of time as rastering is a complicated method and couldn’t get it to consistently work (something to work on) Backtracking a little, the doodling is as follows: Whilst I have no idea if it would actually work or not, I'm envisioning a really impactful, environmentalism poster, laser cut, featuring a QR code acting as a sort of answer to a proposed question... I'm not sure if this would work better as a photo based raster or a simple line work p...

Laser cutting no.2

Paula Scher Play! The purple post it note reminded me of this piece by Scher that I was actually really inspired by during the BBC Maestro course and the origin of the poster from play to finalised. As an illustrator, my go-to is always to start with a pencil or pen on paper and visually work out my thoughts to then develop and often I end up preferring the hand rendered, visual thinking over the refined outcome, which is the same with this piece for me. I really enjoy the in-perfection and non-uniformity of hand drawn type and was just inspired to 'play' so I gave it a go: Creating a 3 dimensional visual from 2 dimensional - these would be cool to recreate digitally but the likelihood of them being any other than digital or print is low. The colour usage here is interesting because I automatically went for my preferred colours rather than thinking about what I was trying to visualise and whilst the blue and green don't work well together, being two opposing shades, it vi...

An experiment! Getting back to laser cutting

Image
After taking a bit of a step back from all things uni work, I got back into the 3D workshop to use the laser cutter. I had an idea for the service I work for with the uni which included cutting into post it notes to then be used throughout the uni and on our socials. Wasn't too sure the idea would work but it's something different and creates something ordinary that normally wouldn’t look out of place to suddenly look that bit of place which intrigued me. It took quite some working out and suddenly made my wooden QR code idea that bit less out there but I figured I would give them both a go: Initial attempt... accidentally cut a line through it! Second attempt - interesting difference after being sanded down, the colour difference doesn't seem so intense. Considerably bigger than the two above - I wanted to see if size mattered here or not. Interestingly, when I sanded them down yesterday they didn't scan but today, with specific angles they do... somewhat of a success...
