Learning style test & Active learning (what is it?)

Image
Whilst I knew learning style tests existed, I don't think I've ever actually taken one... so I did - 10 questions to figure out how I learn best! Quick and easy. I'm not sure if it is actually meant to be that short but said 10 questions covered the main areas of learning (reading ability, methods used to remember information etc.) https://arden.ac.uk/what-type-learner-are-you Having recently been tested and diagnosed with dyslexia, I already knew this (and became increasingly obvious throughout uni anyway) but had I taken a similar test when I was younger and actually taken the time to stop and think about why I was actually struggling. I of course can't, as a designer, produce a learning style test nor do I think it would be particularly helpful anyway but it's good context to look into. Having read into learning styles, it's a bit overwhelming seeing just how many theories there are over different learning styles and preferred methods for learning but it wou...

Further research and thoughts on education & inclusion

Image
Following on from reading the ways of learning, I wanted to expand my knowledge and gain some more ideas/thoughts and given that the entire concept of this project is surrounding inclusion and 'levelling the playing field', the title 'Learning Styles and Inclusion' seemed liked a good place to gain some insights. Whilst there were a few useful insights, a large majority of the (much thicker) book had either already been covered in the previous book, was purely noting studies that didn't seem all that relevant now, without much in the way of analysis or was just too broad for this project. Of course it's good to gain as much info as I can but as I'm not a teacher and will have no control over the environment which any learning materials I may/could produce would be used within, reading in depth into how to create an effective learning environment or similar isn't helpful. My notes and photos are as follows: Mainly just quotes that stuck out to me. The fi...

Ways of learning - learning theory & styles

Image
This is really the first proper research I have done into learning theory and how, as human being, we learn, which is surprising really as a lot of my projects throughout uni have been education based. It would seem as if this unit/project is really helping me to understand what research is and what it can look like, especially as during my BA I wasn't really recommended any reading per-say. A lot of what I read I already knew to a degree and some was mentioned by Robinson in 'Why creativity' which was interesting but makes sense as he's all about inclusivity in education and inspiring through creativity in education. I think probably one of the biggest things I noticed from this book is just how many different theories there are, both in terms of how teaching should be done as well as different learning styles. I knew about the base levels styles - audio, visual and physical movement (put in simple terms) - but it would seem it goes much deeper! This being said, one t...

Why research? What's the purpose outside of a degree?

I think the purpose and value of research is very much lost in the beginning stages of a degree, especially in first year (as a creative, anyway). The attitude of most is just the want to create continuously and 'improve' their skills and ability. This was certainly the case for me - I didn't see the point in research, outside of gaining factual information where it was needed (a valid and important form of research but certainly not the only form of crucial research). I saw it is as grading criteria that I threw in where I could - 'The work of this artist is interesting in the way they provoke emotions in the viewer, which is something I am trying to do', or something along those lines would usually be the case! However, recently (yes, there is a reason for going so off topic here) I have really come to understand what research actually is, both for me as an individual but also in the great context. Since September I have been working as a content creator and grap...

Why creativity? A discussion with Sir Ken Robinson

Image
This read was really engaging for me as a lot of it was somewhat confirming a lot of my current thoughts and what I've kind of based this project on - education for all, not just the 'intellectually gifted' and the notion of giving those like myself the chance to feel equal in education.  "Teaching creatively means that teachers use their own creative skills to make ideas and content more interesting. Some of the great teachers we know are the most creative teachers because they find a way of connecting what they're teaching to student interests." - This really resonated with me whilst reading this because whilst I'm not a teacher, my passion and interests are in using my creative skills to communicate and educate others on what I see as important. Last year I created an elaborate book with a wooden case all about environmentalism because I wanted to create something different, that might just stand a chance of engaging a younger audience in competition ...
