Why creativity? A discussion with Sir Ken Robinson
This read was really engaging for me as a lot of it was somewhat confirming a lot of my current thoughts and what I've kind of based this project on - education for all, not just the 'intellectually gifted' and the notion of giving those like myself the chance to feel equal in education.
"Teaching creatively means that teachers use their own creative skills to make ideas and content more interesting. Some of the great teachers we know are the most creative teachers because they find a way of connecting what they're teaching to student interests." - This really resonated with me whilst reading this because whilst I'm not a teacher, my passion and interests are in using my creative skills to communicate and educate others on what I see as important. Last year I created an elaborate book with a wooden case all about environmentalism because I wanted to create something different, that might just stand a chance of engaging a younger audience in competition with technology! My stance as a creative is to use my voice and creative ability to break through the barriers and communicate in a way that's going to be heard.
That is what I see this article as being all about - thinking of new and exciting ways that we as creatives and educators can engage everyone, not just those who are lucky enough to sit, read and absorb!
Something that I hadn't necessarily thought of, prior to reading this is maybe I still do this 'mini scavenger hunt' concept but include both an element of collaboration because "most original thinking comes through collaboration and through the stimulation of other people's ideas" as well as include a multitude of different 'activities' to allow of different skills to shine. Such as dance or acting, drawing, creative writing, public speaking, puzzles/riddles etc. maybe even a research task as well to hopefully engage all the different skill sets but more development on this will come from research into the different learning methods/styles.
